ONE OF THE BEST AREAS TO RETIRE: SOUTH FLORIDA
You’ve scraped for and saved every penny you’ve ever earned in your life. Nearing retirement age, you might be asking yourself, “What now?”
Have you ever considered moving to South Florida?
There are lots of reasons to spend the remaining best years of your life in the Sunshine State. Aside from the great weather and more than a hundred miles of canals, Floridians enjoy one big benefit: No state income tax!
Ranking number 6 in Money magazine’s “ 10 Best Cities to Retire 2013” counts for a lot! “They got their facts straight,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler, who says he did not campaign for the designation and this burst of good news is not completely surprising. “They never reached out to me,” he said. “But I got an email notifying me. I can’t tell you who it came from.”
Aside from making it to Money Magazine’s “10 Best Cities to Retire”, the city has made its way in other “Best of” and “Top” lists in other magazines and websites which are just as reputable. As a matter of fact, the city also landed on Livability.com’s Top 100 Best Places to Live.
Among the city’s accolades, it’s worth noting that it’s also been ranked as one of the top places to start a new business, one of the best cities to be a young professional and one of the finest cities to do business. “I’d say we’re really hitting on all cylinders,” claims Seiler.
Lanham and Associate’s Gary Lanham also believes although this is great news, it’s very much expected. “Fort Lauderdale is a great place for any family to live in,” says Lanham. “It’s great for kids to grow up in. It provides ample opportunities for young professionals to work. It has a tropical vibe which makes it an ideal tourist destination. And now, with the way things are, it’s obvious that many people would want to spend the remainder of their lives here.”
But take note. Retirement in South Florida doesn’t necessarily mean bed pans in nursing homes. Although South Florida can offer you a laid-back lifestyle, it’s far from sedentary. People who come to South Florida don’t retire to live out their remaining years in silence but to have an ideal environment which would fit their lively pursuits.
