HEALTH BENEFITS OF SPENDING TIME AT THE BEACH
What is it about this experience in nature that helps us feel amazingly good? It’s been proven that spending time at the beach can serve to recharge us physically, mentally and spiritually. There truly is something very special about watching the ocean’s rhythm as you walk along the beach with the sand beneath your feet. It is both an ethereal and grounding experience all at once that cannot be fully explained.
IS THERE ANYTHING MORE REFRESHING AND RELAXING THAN
SPENDING TIME AT THE BEACH ON A SUNNY DAY?
In our tech-heavy world and work-driven lives, it is sometimes difficult to unplug. The beach is the perfect place to replenish our energy and we should make a lot more use of it! There’s no other place that is as soothing, relaxing, and inspiring as Mother Nature’s beautiful and abundant ocean and seashore. A short walk on the beach can do wonders to decrease stress and help you reset.
Unplugging is good for the mind, body and soul. According to a multitude of studies conducted in the U.S. and abroad, staying constantly plugged in has been associated with stress, loss of sleep, and depression. A study conducted by the University of Exeter took it a step further. They found that simply living near the beach can also be beneficial to your health and well-being. They took into account people’s proximity to the beach and their self-reported health to conclude that living seaside may actually result in better health.
HEALTH BENEFITS FOR MIND, BODY, & SOUL
EXERCISE WITHOUT TRYING VERY HARD
It’s a room with a view – the perfect distraction while burning calories. Going to the beach usually involves some kind of activity. Whether you take a stroll or jog down the beach, go for a swim, surf, or play beach volleyball, you’re burning a good number of calories while having fun!
Walking on the beach is already a better workout than walking on concrete. Walking on sand requires 1.6-2.5 times more work than does walking on a hard surface at the same speed. A leisurely swim can burn about 200 calories. Surfing and tossing a frisbee can burn over 100. Beach volleyball will really get you moving, burning nearly 300. So ditch the gym — and make the beach your new fitness friend.
SUNLIGHT IS A MAGICAL HEALER
Sunlight is the Best Source of Vitamin D. Did you know that most people get 80 to 90% of their daily dose of Vitamin D from sun exposure? According to information provided by the Harvard Medical School, the most natural and substantial source of the vitamin depends on how much UVB light gets through to you. That light reacts with a cholesterol-related compound and metabolizes into vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, creates healthy skin, and helps to improve our mental health.
It’s important to get responsible sun exposure! Let the sun do its job in providing you with a good dose of Vitamin D without creating skin damage in the process. Spending 15 – 20 minutes without any sunscreens or sunblocks usually gets the job done. After that apply some protection to keep you safe from the possibility of skin cancer.
SUNLIGHT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO DECREASE DEPRESSION
Yes, it has been scientifically proven that sunshine makes us happier. People tend to feel better in the warmer months of the year vs. the colder and damper months. With increased exposure to sunlight, serotonin gets released into the bloodstream giving us a mood boost. This has positive effects on daily stress, ability to sleep, and even appetite.
SAND IS A NATURAL EXFOLIANT
When you walk across those seemingly infinite grains of sand, somewhere between 3,000 and 7,000 nerve endings in each foot awaken. Wet sand acts as a natural exfoliant and peels off dead skin cells from your feet and anywhere else on your body that you apply wet sand, leaving them renewed and feeling much softer.
ANTI-AGING SEAWATER PRESERVES ELASTICITY OF THE SKIN
The ocean is full of anti-aging minerals that can counter the decline of your skin’s elasticity. As we grow older, our skin tends to lose its tightness and suppleness. And while some people will do almost anything to look young, instead of spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year on anti-aging remedies, here’s one for free. Treat your skin to saltwater regularly to keep everything a little bit tighter. Get 20 minutes of unprotected sunshine every day possible and achieve the glow you’re looking for.
MINERALS IN THE OCEAN COULD HELP RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
The minerals in the ocean could help reduce symptoms for those with rheumatoid arthritis. According to a study, patients who used bath salts made from Dead Sea minerals also experienced fewer symptoms, like morning stiffness and trouble with hand gripping. Getting enough vitamin D, also contributes to fewer symptoms – taking a swim in the ocean on a sunny day just might be the most natural cure.
